Westfjords

Látrabjarg

Látrabjarg is a promontory and the westernmost point in Iceland. The cliffs are home to millions of birds, including puffins, northern gannets, guillemots and razorbills. It is vital for their survival as it hosts up to 40% of the world population for some species e.g. the Razorbill.

Skrímslasetur Icelandic Sea Monster Museum

The museum keeps track of sea monster stories, not least from Arnarfjordur. There you can listen to stories and see interviews with people who have seen sea monsters. You can also find illustrated stories in an interactive storyboard. There are also models of Arnarfjordur's main sea monsters.

Dynjandi

Dynjandi is a series of waterfalls. The waterfalls have a total height of 100 metres

Þingeyri

Thingeyri is a settlement in the municipality of Ísafjarðarbær. It is located on the coast of the fjord Dýrafjörður. You can rent mountain bikes at Simbahöllin cafe and follow the dirt road that runs northwest along the northern edge of the peninsula and along Dýrafjörður to the valley at Haukadalur. Inland, the Westfjords’ highest peak, Kaldbakur (998m), is a good hiking spot. The steep trail to the summit begins from the road about 2km west of Þingeyri town. Þingeyri town has a Tourist Office.

Westfjord History Museum

The Westfjords Heritage Museum is a museum in Ísafjörður. The museum is based on maritime heritage and gives an insight into the local Westfjords fisheries and fishing industry as well the life of the fishermen, their families and the coastal culture through the centuries.

Hornstrandir Nature Reserve

Hornstrandir is a remote wilderness and a protected site. The reserve has important colonies of seabirds, nesting in particular in the cliffs of Hornbjarg and Hælavíkurbjarg. You can get to observe the Arctic fox.

Djupavik Art Factory

An old herring factory converted in to an art exhibtion center.

Ísafjörður

Ísafjörður is the the capital of the Westfjords and a cute coastal town with a population of around 2.600 people.

A sleepy village which is home to the museum of sorcery and witchcraft.

Reykhólar

This small town is home to a museum about the relationship between man and nature. Great spot for bird watching.

Flateyri

You will find a restaurant and pub, a swimming pool, as well as the Nonsense Museum, housing historical oddities from around the world.
